Business Carbon Footprint Calculator

Estimate your organisation's carbon footprint in a few minutes. Enter a year of energy, fuel, travel, water and waste figures and see your emissions by scope, your largest sources and your emissions per employee, using the UK government's 2026 conversion factors.

Why this matters. Customers, lenders and public sector buyers increasingly ask for a carbon footprint, and large companies must report energy and emissions under SECR. Most of the numbers you need are already on your bills.

Leave any field blank that does not apply. Treat the result as an estimate, not a verified footprint.

Scope 1: fuels you burn

From your gas bills or supplier statements.

Oil delivered for heating during the year.

Bottled or bulk LPG for heating, cooking or forklifts.

Fuel bought on company cards or delivered to site.

Fuel bought on company cards for owned or leased vehicles.

Scope 2: electricity you buy

From your electricity bills, across all sites.

Scope 3: travel, water and waste

Mileage claimed through expenses.

An estimate is fine.

Return trips within the UK.

Return trips to Europe and nearby destinations.

Return trips beyond Europe.

From your water bills.

From your waste contractor's reports.

Optional. Used to show emissions per employee.

Please enter at least one figure, such as your electricity or gas use.

Need a footprint you can report and reduce?

This calculator covers the sources most organisations can measure in an afternoon. A footprint for SECR, a carbon reduction plan or a customer request also needs purchased goods and services, commuting and the other scope 3 categories. We can measure it properly and turn it into a costed reduction plan.

Factors come from the UK government's greenhouse gas reporting conversion factors 2026. Electricity is location based. Flights use average passenger factors including radiative forcing, with typical return distances of 900 km domestic, 3,000 km short haul and 14,000 km long haul. Car mileage uses the average petrol car factor. This is a deliberately simple model.

How to calculate your company's carbon footprint

  1. Set the boundary: the sites, vehicles and activities you control, usually everything in your group.
  2. Collect a year of activity data: energy bills, fuel cards, mileage claims, travel bookings, water bills and waste reports.
  3. Multiply each activity by its conversion factor to get kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent.
  4. Group the results by scope: scope 1 for fuels you burn, scope 2 for electricity you buy, scope 3 for everything else in your value chain.
  5. Fix a baseline year, then set targets and a reduction plan. Our carbon reduction plan template and guide to scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions will help.

Common questions

How do you calculate a company's carbon footprint?

Collect a year of activity data, such as energy use, fuel, travel, water and waste, multiply each by the matching UK government conversion factor, and group the results into scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3.

Which conversion factors should UK businesses use?

The UK government's greenhouse gas reporting conversion factors, published each year by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. This calculator uses the 2026 set.

Is this calculator enough for SECR reporting?

It covers the main energy and travel sources, but an SECR report also needs your actual energy use for the financial year, an intensity ratio, your methodology and a description of energy efficiency action. Use it as a first estimate.

What is the difference between location based and market based electricity emissions?

Location based uses the average UK grid factor. Market based reflects the tariff you actually buy, such as a renewable contract backed by certificates. This calculator shows location based.

Why is scope 3 incomplete here?

For most organisations the largest emissions sit in purchased goods and services, which need spend or supplier data. This calculator includes travel, water, waste and electricity network losses only.

What is a good carbon footprint for a business?

There is no single benchmark. Compare emissions per employee or per pound of turnover with peers in your sector, and track your own trend year on year.
