CSRD vs UK SRS: What UK Groups Need to Know

If you run a UK group with operations in Europe, you are watching two reporting regimes develop in parallel and wondering how much of your effort counts twice. The short answer is that they share DNA but are not the same, and a UK group with EU entities may have to satisfy both. Here is how they relate.

Two frameworks, one lineage

The EU’s reporting sits under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, delivered through the European Sustainability Reporting Standards. The UK is developing its own Sustainability Reporting Standards, built on the international ISSB baseline. Both aim at decision useful sustainability information, but they diverge on one fundamental point.

The materiality difference

This is the difference that matters most. The European standards require double materiality: you report both your impact on the world and the financial effect of sustainability matters on your business. The ISSB baseline that underpins the emerging UK framework is built on financial materiality alone, focused on what affects enterprise value.

In practice this means a group reporting under both cannot simply write once and file twice. The European report demands impact information the UK framework does not, and the assessment work behind them, while overlapping, is not identical.

Scope: different tests, different populations

Since the EU Omnibus package, CSRD applies only above 1,000 employees and €450 million turnover, with a separate route for large non EU parents with significant EU revenue. The UK framework has its own scope and phasing. It is entirely possible to be inside one and outside the other, which is exactly why a UK group with EU subsidiaries has to test both separately rather than assuming a single answer.

What a dual reporter should do

The practical takeaway

Do not treat these as two projects. Treat them as two outputs of one reporting capability. The expensive, slow work, mapping data, building controls, running materiality, is largely shared. The differences are real but sit mostly in presentation and in the impact dimension that Europe requires and the UK, for now, does not.

We help UK groups navigate both regimes as a single reporting operation. See ESG and compliance or get in touch.

Common questions

What is the difference between CSRD and UK SRS?

CSRD is EU law and uses the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, built on double materiality: how the business affects people and the environment as well as how sustainability affects the business. UK SRS are the UK’s standards based on the ISSB’s IFRS S1 and S2, which focus on financial materiality: the sustainability risks and opportunities that affect enterprise value.

Can a UK group be caught by both?

Yes. A UK group with large EU subsidiaries or significant EU turnover can fall within CSRD while also preparing UK SRS disclosures, which is why it pays to run CSRD and UK SRS as one operation with a single data and controls framework.
