Case study
Programme Director for the largest separation in National Grid’s history, standing up the National Energy System Operator as an organisation in its own right.
Separating a business as large and critical as the electricity system operator from National Grid is not a reorganisation, it is the creation of a new national institution while the old one keeps the lights on. It was the largest separation in National Grid’s history. Systems, data, people, processes, governance and controls all had to be untangled from the parent and stood up so that the new National Energy System Operator could operate in its own right from day one, with no interruption to a function the entire country relies on. There is no room to get a separation of that importance wrong, and no way to pause the system while it is done.
As Programme Director, our leadership ran the separation end to end, treating day one readiness as the non negotiable.
The National Energy System Operator was separated from National Grid and stood up as an organisation in its own right, in the largest separation the business had undertaken, without interrupting the operation of the national energy system. A carve out at the scale of national infrastructure, delivered.
A separation of that size is the hardest kind of carve out there is, standing up a new organisation, from day one, around a function that cannot stop. Having directed it, we bring carve out and separation experience at a scale and criticality almost no other firm of our size can claim.
Great British Grid will need the same disciplines this separation demanded. We set out how they apply on our grid reform page and in this article.
We have directed the largest separation in National Grid’s history. Whatever the scale of yours, we know how to reach day one without leaving dependencies behind.
