Case study
Directing the IT infrastructure behind the communication of tens of millions of smart meters across the UK energy market.
Britain’s smart metering programme depends on infrastructure most people never see, the systems that let tens of millions of meters communicate reliably across the country. Building that infrastructure is unforgiving in a specific way. It runs in a live, regulated national environment where there is no soft launch, no quiet pilot to hide in, and no easy way back once it is carrying real traffic. The systems have to work at national scale from the moment they go live, and they have to keep working, because the whole market and its customers sit on top of them.
Our leadership directed the programme delivering that infrastructure, with Smart DCC and Capita in the delivery chain.
The infrastructure was delivered into a live, regulated national environment and carried communication across the smart metering estate. It is proof of technology delivery at national scale, in a setting where failure is a public event rather than a private inconvenience.
Delivering technology into a live national environment is a different order of difficulty from a contained project. There is no room for a soft launch and no way to quietly fix things later. Having led exactly that, we bring a realism about national scale delivery that is very hard to acquire any other way.
We have led technology delivery into live, regulated national environments where there is no soft launch. We bring that experience to your programme.
