PMO consultancy: setup and uplift

A good programme management office is the difference between a portfolio that is under control and one that merely produces a lot of reports. A bad one is administrative weight that everyone routes around. We design, set up and strengthen PMOs so they add control where it matters and nowhere it does not.

Talk to us

PEF Consulting Partners sets up and uplifts PMOs that run real programmes, drawing on a global PMO our leadership ran across nine hundred contractors on BP’s EV charging programme. A PMO should make decisions faster and bad news travel quicker; we build them to do exactly that.

What we help with

PMO design

The right operating model for your situation, portfolio, programme or project office, with a clear remit. What it decides, what it monitors, what it leaves alone. Most struggling PMOs fail because their purpose was never defined.

Governance and gates

A governance model that makes decisions at the right level and assurance gates that mean something, so investment is committed in stages against evidence rather than in one hopeful bet.

Reporting that informs decisions

Reporting designed around the decisions leaders actually need to make, not a dashboard that reports everything and illuminates nothing. Honest status that surfaces problems early.

Financial and resource control

Knowing what is being spent against what was approved, and whether the people the portfolio needs are available, in one place, kept current.

Uplift of an existing PMO

Often the job is not to build a PMO but to fix one that has drifted into administration. We assess what it does, cut what adds no value, and rebuild it around control and decision support.

The principle we work to

A PMO earns its place by improving decisions and outcomes, not by producing documents. Every process it runs should be answerable to that test. If a report changes no decision, it should not exist.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PMO worth it for a single programme?

For a large or complex one, yes, though it should be proportionate. A major transformation needs real programme control. A small project needs light touch discipline, not a bureaucracy.

Our PMO produces lots of reports but nothing improves. Can you help?

That is one of the most common situations we are asked into. The fix is usually to strip the PMO back to what supports decisions and rebuild from there.
